Do you have a product in mind?
Have you done the market research?
Is it something you already know about or is it something new to you?
Where are you going to buy it - locally or from the other side of the world?
If you're importing from the Far East did you know the Pound has lost over 30% of its value against virtually all currencies in the last few months?
Are you aware importing is much more difficult than it was even 12 months ago?
Did you know virtually all markets are saturated with everyone reducing their prices just to sell what they have?
Do you have money in the bank you're prepared to risk buying a few thousand widgets from China - especially in these uncertain times?
Can you get a bank loan - is your bank even lending at the moment?

So...the product is not so straightforward.

2. The Web Site

Do you know how to design a web site? If so great
If not.....quality software will cost you between $100 and $500 (forget the free programmes)
If you don't know what makes a good web site put aside another $50 on 2 or 3 good design books....and count on it taking you about a week to read them
Set aside at least another $50 and 3-4 weeks of your time learning HOW to use your web site design software using more books
How are you going to get paid? Plan on spending at least another $100 on shopping cart software, payment processors, etc. And if you don't know how to install all that you'll have to pay someone else to do it for you.....
What about graphics? A good graphics programme will cost you around $200, then you still have to learn how to use it.....
Last but certainly not least your site will need sales copy....a reasonable one will cost you a minimum of $2,500

If you do all that yourself in less than 2 months whilst working a full time job, you've done well. Of course you could pay someone to design the site for you - that would be around $1,500.....not including the sales copy of course.

3. Traffic

Anyway, on to Part 3....how to get customers to find your web site. Basically there are 2 ways you can do this - spend a little money and a lot of time, or spend a lot of money and a little time.

You can pay to find customers using things like Google Adwords but unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing, it's a very quick way to lose money
You can find customers for free using lots of different methods (articles, forums, social network sites etc) but you'll need to spend some money learning how to do it CORRECTLY and a LOT of time putting it into place. I speak from experience

"Aaarrrggghhh!" I hear you say

I have done ALL of the above, that was not some fictitious stuff I've copied and pasted from somewhere, every bit of that is from personal experience. I HAVE spent a fortune and wasted MONTHS doing everything I've just written about. Do you want to know the worst part? Despite all of that I didn't make ANY money!! Most people don't.

Yep - there is an element of truth in all of the above. No question about it. But but but....there is an almost hidden, "under the radar" part of eBay away from all that. This part of eBay is overlooked by the scammers, and indeed by the business opportunity seekers.

It is a part that, although hugely respectable and ethical AND profitable is almost looked down upon by the so-called "real eBay traders". Why would I do this?

Let me explain....the "Secret Loophole" that I mentioned earlier....

Until a few short months ago one of the hottest online money making systems was selling cheap eBooks for next to nothing on eBay. Like me, you probably wondered how on earth these people could make money from products selling at such ridiculously low prices. So I decided to investigate a bit further......

The system worked like this.....

You added someone who paid you a few cents for your eBook on say, Dog Training, to your customer list.

A week later, because that person had bought from you, they are more receptive to buying from you again. So you sent them an email with an offer for, say "The Advanced Guide to Dog Training - set of 6 DVDs" selling for $29.95. A percentage of people who bought your original "20 cent basic eBook" bought your "$29.95 advanced package".

However.....

The system of selling 20 cent eBooks via eBay depended on ONE very important thing to make it profitable - "automated digital downloads". That 'mouthful' just means that it was possible to set up your eBay account to AUTOMATICALLY email your customer the link to the eBook as soon as they paid. Which meant you had ZERO processing costs.

That is until the fateful day at the end of March 2008 when, without warning or discussion, eBay suddenly changed the rules....

only physical products that you could package and post could be sold via eBay.

No warning, no discussion, their decision was final - long standing, respected business sellers had less than 7 days to completely change their business models! Many people had their listings removed by eBay before the 7 days were up.

Robert, why should I buy from you, after all you're not a big name guru?

Big name gurus - right, very funny. Over the last 2 years I've bought products and training programs from the so-called gurus at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars. Here's a small sample

$5,000 coaching programme from one of the biggest names on the Seminar Circuit. What was supposed to be a 12 month program disappeared after 5 weeks, relaunched a few times since then with lots of apologies that "things will be different this time". They never were. $5,000 down the drain. Charming person though....
$10,000 one day seminar by a guy very big in the UK - promised training, products to sell and email support. The training was basic at best, the products while fine have flooded the market and were out of date. Email support? Ha, don't make me laugh - non-existent. Funnily enough, I'm still waiting for a support reply from a question submitted 7 weeks ago, despite reminders by email and telephone to his office
$4,000 private programme to create and joint venture a product. Sounded great in principle except when it came down to it this guy NEVER replied to an email. Not once. This is one of the most respected marketers in the UK, funnily enough he's just launched another product that everyone is promoting as I write this. Buy the product if you want, I'm sure it's good but I wouldn't touch his training programmes with a barge pole - another $4,000 written off, this well known "guru" just took my money and ran. Yet he quite happily speaks at seminars in the UK
$1,000 product bought from one of the biggest names in the UK, indeed the internet, with promised email support. NOT once has this guy replied to over 30 emails going back 18 months!!!
The so-called "biggest product on the internet" that doesn't actually work, but gets relaunched under a different name every 6 months, with a price increase every time! And still people buy it!

Sure there are some very good people out there, but by the time you've found them, unless you're very lucky, you will have wasted a LOT of money first. I certainly did.

Actually as an added bonus, once we are working together I'll tell you who the "good guys" are - they are out there, but they're a little more difficult to find these days.

If you want to take a chance on the gurus - go right ahead. I've been there before you and got the big hole in my bank account to show for it and not much else.

Fair enough, but who are you then?

Although relatively new to internet marketing, unlike most of the "big names" I did run my own very successful OFFLINE business for nearly 25 years - sales and marketing. The picture on the right is what I did - I sold retail sales merchandisers full of hand tools and security products.

Please note - that is NOT a stock image. I actually set up and sold that display. I can give you the name and location of the shop, you can go there and mention my name and ask them about me - email me.

Nationally here in the UK, I was the most successful person in my particular field and the product I was selling was the sector brand leader. Outside my area - the North West of England - the company I was a self-employed agent for were unknown.

Was I successful? Let me put it this way - at the relatively young age of 44 technically I am now retired and living mostly abroad. I am not a millionaire but I am totally debt free. With careful financial management I certainly don't need to worry about getting a job again. However, sitting on my backside the rest of my life doesn't appeal to me, and the amount of "get rich quick" rubbish that is peddled on the internet irritates me.
